African American Community Advocate

The Legal Rights Center, Inc. (LRC) seeks an outstanding candidate to join our team as the organization’s African American Community Advocate.

LRC is a community-based nonprofit law firm in Hennepin County and our mission is to work with our communities to seek justice and promote racial equity for those to whom it has been historically denied. We do this through criminal defense, restorative justice, advocacy, and community education. LRC’s African American Community Advocate is a critical team member, focused on
community engagement and advocacy and individual client advocacy. 

 

Their position responsibilities include: 

  • Building community understanding and awareness of all LRC’s work through regular community outreach events, active participation in community coalitions and working groups, and representing LRC in community gatherings focused on advancement of community advocacy goals; 
  • Development of and ongoing support for organizational partnerships, including identification of and outreach to organizations that LRC should partner with, and building and maintaining reciprocal relationships with staff at partner organizations;
  • Advocating for the needs of LRC clients within the organization and in the community, including: conducting intake consultations with individuals seeking representation and/or support from LRC, referring individuals to partner organizations as appropriate, presenting prospective client cases to LRC attorneys for full representation, and engaging clients in a holistic support model;
  • Partnering with attorneys to support clients’ legal cases, including: conducting investigations as necessary, identifying and supporting access to treatment or programming, client court preparation and support, jail visits to facilitate conversations about case and representation, attending court hearings to support clients as needed, and providing testimony on sentencing / disposition as needed;
  • Support for LRC’s other programmatic initiatives including Community Legal Education, organizing / policy advocacy, and Restorative Practices Facilitation;
  • Data tracking and other related tasks. 
  • Deep connections with African American communities in Hennepin County and/or
    Minnesota;
  • Demonstrate a passion and high-level skill for identifying and building meaningful,
    reciprocal and sustainable relationships; 
  • Persuasive and effectively leverages strong oral and written communication skills; 
  • Demonstrated interest and experience working with: BIPOC communities, Youth, including youth at-risk of justice system involvement, Low-income Populations, and Multicultural Populations; 
  • Self-motivated and takes initiative;
  • Effectively leverages internal and external partnerships and is able to work both in a team and independently;
  • Strong organizational skills, including strong facility for multitasking; and
  • Willingness to use own vehicle for work related travel to courts, community meetings, etc. (mileage reimbursed)

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. At times might need to lift and carry small parcels, packages & other items and to navigate through short distances in an office.

Compensation for this position is in the range of $45,000 to $52,000 annually based upon qualifications and experience. Health and dental insurance and retirement benefits provided.
